Claim Support → Escalation

When the insurer won't listen, here's who will.

India has a three-step, free escalation ladder for insurance complaints: the insurer's own grievance cell, IRDAI's Bima Bharosa portal, and the Insurance Ombudsman. Used in order, with everything in writing, they resolve a large share of disputed claims without a lawyer or court.

The free three-step escalation ladder: the insurer's grievance cell, then IRDAI Bima Bharosa, then the Insurance Ombudsman

When should you escalate?

Step 1: The insurer's own grievance cell

Write to the insurer's grievance email (on every policy document's first page). State: policy number, claim number, what happened, what you want, and attach evidence. They must respond within {{VERIFY: 15 days}}. Keep the grievance reference number — you need it for the next steps.

Step 2: IRDAI Bima Bharosa

Bima Bharosa ({{VERIFY URL: bimabharosa.irdai.gov.in}}) is IRDAI's own complaint portal. Register, pick your insurer, describe the complaint, upload the grievance correspondence from Step 1. IRDAI routes it to the insurer with the regulator watching the response. You can also call IRDAI's grievance helpline {{VERIFY: 155255}}.

Step 3: The Insurance Ombudsman

The Ombudsman is an independent authority that hears policyholder complaints free of charge — no lawyer needed. File within {{VERIFY: one year}} of the insurer's final reply (or if the insurer hasn't replied within {{VERIFY: 30 days}} of your written complaint). Awards are binding on the insurer up to {{VERIFY: current monetary limit}}. Delhi has its own Ombudsman office; we help clients prepare the complete filing.

We do this for our clients

Escalations are paperwork wars, and insurers fight them every day — you don't. For GampInsure clients, we draft the grievance, file on Bima Bharosa, and prepare the Ombudsman application. You sign; we chase.

Your questions, answered

Does complaining to IRDAI actually work?

Bima Bharosa complaints go to the insurer with the regulator copied — response quality and speed noticeably improve. It's also a required paper trail before the Ombudsman.

How long does the Ombudsman take?

Timelines vary by case load; straightforward claim disputes are commonly decided within {{VERIFY: a few months}}.

Can I go to consumer court instead?

Yes — the Ombudsman and consumer courts are separate tracks. For most claim amounts, the Ombudsman is faster and free. We'll tell you honestly if your case belongs in court.
